Cozy Bedroom Reset: The 12 Things I Change When It Gets Cold

Somewhere around the second week of October our bedroom stops working. The summer bedding is too thin, the sun comes up at an angle that hits the bed directly, and the overhead light feels surgical at seven in the morning. Every year I fix it in an afternoon and every year I wonder why I waited three weeks.
This is the reset, in the order I do it. Bedding first, then light, then the small stuff. It is our own room, not the guest room, which means everything here is chosen for actually sleeping in rather than for looking good in a photo.

Start With What You Sleep Under
The single biggest comfort change is the duvet, and specifically the weight of the insert inside it. Most people buy one insert and use it all year, which is why the bed feels wrong for half of it. A medium-weight insert plus a quilt you can pull up is more flexible than one heavy comforter.
Washed Cotton Gingham Duvet Cover Set
Linen-like washed cotton, which is the texture that makes a bed look slept-in on purpose. Gingham is small enough to read as neutral from across the room.
Percale Duvet Cover Set
If you sleep hot, percale over sateen every time. It is crisp rather than silky and it breathes, which matters even in winter with the heat running.
Quilted Comforter Duvet Insert
Medium weight, baffle-quilted so the fill does not migrate to one end by February. This is the piece to spend on, because a bad insert makes a beautiful duvet cover feel like a bag.
White Quilted Quilt Set
Lightweight, folded across the foot of the bed. It is the layer you pull up at two in the morning without waking up enough to deal with the whole duvet, and it is what makes a bed look finished.
Mulberry Silk Pillowcases
Winter air is the reason to do this, not vanity. Cotton wicks moisture out of skin and hair all night; silk does not. Get the ones with a zipper so they stay on.
Iron-On Duvet Snaps
Six dollars, and it fixes the thing that makes people hate duvets. The insert stops sliding into a lump at the bottom of the cover. I wish I had known about these years earlier.
Then Fix the Light
Two separate problems: too much light in the morning, and the wrong kind at night. Blackout curtains solve the first. A lamp you can reach without getting up solves the second.
Pinch Pleated Blackout Curtains, Natural
Pinch pleat is what makes a curtain look custom instead of like a panel from a package. These are fully blackout, linen-blend, and the natural color keeps a dark curtain from making the room feel like a cave.

Mocha Brown Velvet Blackout Curtains
Velvet blocks more light and more sound than anything else, and in a bedroom that faces a street the sound part is the real benefit.

Curtain Glide Tape
Three dollars. It stops the rings catching on the rod, which is the small daily annoyance you stop noticing only because you have given up on it.
Cordless Rechargeable Table Lamp
No cord means you can put it anywhere, including a nightstand with no outlet behind it. Warm, dimmable, and it charges on a base. This is the piece people ask me about most.
Ceramic Hourglass Bedside Lamp
The traditional option if you have an outlet and want something with more presence. Put a warm bulb in it, not a daylight one.
Texture Is the Last Ten Percent
Once the bedding and light are right, the room needs one more layer of soft. Chenille pillow covers over whatever inserts you already own is the cheapest version of this.
Sage Green Chenille Pillow Covers, 22x22
Big enough to sit behind your sleeping pillows, and chenille reads warm in a way cotton does not.
Khaki Chenille Pillow Covers
The neutral version of the same thing. Two sizes of pillow in two colors is all the variation a bed needs.

Textured Chenille Throw Pillow Covers, 20x20
Covers only, which is the point. Swapping covers seasonally costs a fraction of buying pillows and takes up almost no storage.
Two Things That Cost Nothing
Turn the mattress and rotate it head to foot while the bedding is off. You already have everything stripped, and it is the only time of year most people remember to do it.
Move the lamp closer to the bed. Most nightstand lamps sit too far back, which means the light falls behind you instead of on the book. Six inches forward changes the whole room at night.
Cozy Bedroom FAQ
What is the warmest sheet material for winter?
Flannel is warmest, jersey is next and feels like a t-shirt, and waffle sits in between with more texture. If you sleep hot, skip all three and stay on percale cotton with a heavier duvet instead.
What duvet weight do I need?
A medium fill for most people year round, layered with a quilt in winter. Heavy all-season inserts are the reason people wake up too warm at three in the morning.
Do blackout curtains really help you sleep?
Yes, and more in fall and winter than summer, because the low morning sun comes in at an angle that regular panels do not block.
How many pillows should be on a bed?
Two to sleep on, two large decorative behind them, and one lumbar if you like it. More than that and you are moving a pile onto the floor every night.
What color should a bedroom be for winter?
Warm neutrals with one deeper accent. Cream, oatmeal, camel and a sage or mocha. Cool grays read cold once the natural light drops.
