Itโ€™s the time of year that I feel like my guest room is constantly occupied. And let me tell you, I absolutely love it! There is something really special about having a space where I feel like I can host the people I love. Whether they are in town for a night or two, or staying the full week, it is super important to me to have a space where they can feel comfortable and welcomed. I want my guest space to feel intentionally curated, and not just an overflow room of hodge-podge items. There is no better place to start than with a freshly made bed.

Iโ€™ve put together a list of my tried and true bedding options that I use in my guest room and my master! Some are investment pieces, and some are pieces that I have found through Amazon that really are up to the task! I can promise you there have been rave reviews at my house!

Fit for a King

One of the best places to start when creating the ultimate guest bed experience is the mattress. Having a good mattress topper is key to creating a great nightโ€™s rest. A mattress topper can turn even the firmest of beds into a soft crash pad! I have linked a few below. I typically like to go for a memory-foam option. I recommend layering it with a second topper if youโ€™re really wanting to go for it. This cooling mattress topper is a great piece for layering, and it is easily washable. Both are also great as stand alone pieces.

After you feel like your bed is in a comfortable spot, itโ€™s time to pick a sheet set. There are thousands of options out there, and so many people offering deals to try. I have to say, sheets are subjective, but we have consistently had favorable fans with the set on our bed, so I thought I would share!

These sheets are 100% cotton and have held up after countless washes. Theyโ€™ve maintained their shape really well. I like sheets that are cooling, and these do just the trick!

When selecting sheets, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1.) Material - You want to think about the fibers and the blend of your sheets. I go for 100% cotton, but there are some polyester blends that feel just the same and are a bit more affordable! Extra-Long-Staple (ELS) cotton is a more expensive option (what you know as Egyptian cotton), but it softer and more durable than most. Hereโ€™s a link for my top Egyptian Cotton sheet set from Amazon that is currently on sale. Something to note: the more polyester that is in your blend, the less likely your sheets are to wrinkle.
2.) Thread Count - A thread count of 300-500 is a safe range to stay in. Anything under 200 tends to be a bit scratchier, and anything about 500 is extremely expensive, and you may not be able to tell the difference. Wondering what thread count actually means? Itโ€™s simply the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Higher thread counts require finer threads, so your bedding will be more tightly woven, and thus, softer!
3.) Size - Believe it or not, sheets are not one-size fits all. Especially if you have mattress toppers. I like to find sheets that can fit up to a 15 inch mattress. I recommend measuring your mattress from bottom to top with the mattress topper on to ensure your sheets will stand the test!

Amazon Laurel Ashley Pillow Covers

I selected these pillow covers for my decorative pillows because of their quality. The blue adds a little pop of color to any bed!

duvet covers

My duvet insert is one of my favorite things in my house. It is definitely one of my most asked about items! Iโ€™ve tried a few types in the past, but this one has lasted the longest without getting lumpy. Iโ€™ve seen a lot of people double up the duvet inserts inside the cover to give the bed a high end hotel quality feel.

Down v. Down Alternative - Whatโ€™s the difference? The key difference here is that true down inserts are made from real feathers. They give a lightweight, lofty feel. It can also be a great temperature regulator for people who get warm during the night! Whatโ€™s the down side to true down inserts? Well, if you are prone to allergies, you may be allergic to your blanket! Down alternative inserts are great hypoallergenic options and are made from synthetic fibers. They are made from a polyester microfiber fill to mimic the effect of a true down comforter, without the feathers poking through. They are also a more budget friendly choice.

After I chose my duvet insert (I ended up going with the down-alternative), I chose a linen duvet cover that felt super luxurious to me! Hereโ€™s a tutorial on how to easily install your duvet insert.

Finishing Touches

The same rule for down v. down alternative materials can be applied to pillows. True down pillow inserts can give a soft, fluffy feel, but can be hard on the allergies. They also tend to lose their shape a little quicker! Down alternative pillow inserts are a bit denser and can still give a soft feel. In terms of filling and temperature regulating, down pillows are a bit more breathable due to its light nature.

Traditional down filling is more durable than its synthetic counterpart. With daily fluffing and careful cleaning, down pillows and duvets can last for years. Because down alternative is easier to wash at home, it can lead to more wear and tear. However, down alternative pillows and duvets can still last for years with proper care. Using dryer balls or clean tennis balls can eliminate any lumps during the drying process.

The blanket at the end of the bed is the finishing touch! I love a waffle weave to add a little bit of texture. If a guest is coming to stay in a colder month, then I go ahead and make the bed with the blanket!

Taupe affordable velvet quilt for guest room bedding

We recently did a refresh in our guest room downstairs with a little rearranging. With that, I decided to add a new velvet quilt at the food of the bed. It brings so much color and texture and it is oversized which makes it super cozy. Pairing it with hotel quality pillow inserts (shown below) and covers achieves a beautiful and classic look.
