The whole trick with a baby costume is that it has to survive a car seat, a stroller, and a nap. Anything with a stiff shell or a headpiece that ties under the chin is going to come off in the first ten minutes. I look for zip-up, one-piece, machine washable, and soft enough to sleep in.

How to Choose Family Halloween Costumes That Actually Get Worn
Buy for the Weather, Not the Photo
The single biggest mistake I made in my early years was buying a beautiful costume that could not fit a layer underneath. Before you order, ask yourself what the temperature will be at six in the evening on the thirty-first where you live. If the answer is under sixty degrees, buy something with room for a long-sleeve shirt and leggings under it, or buy a onesie and skip the problem entirely.
Size Up for Kids, True to Size for Adults
Costume sizing runs small almost across the board, and children's costume sizing runs smaller than children's clothing sizing from the same brand. If your kid is between sizes, take the bigger one and roll a cuff. Adult costumes generally run true, but check the chest measurement rather than the S-M-L label, because the range on those is enormous.
Machine Washable or Don't Bother
This is my only non-negotiable. Something is getting spilled on. If the costume cannot go through a gentle cycle, it is a one-night purchase, and I would rather spend the same money on something that lives in the dress-up bin for two years.
Pick a Category, Not a Cast
Animals, sports, storybook, travel, weather. Loose categories let a fifteen-year-old and a fifteen-month-old be in the same theme without either of them feeling ridiculous. Assigning specific characters is how you end up negotiating with a nine-year-old at four in the afternoon.
Let the Oldest Kid Choose First
Practical, not sentimental. Little kids will happily go along with almost anything. Big kids will not. Let the hardest person to please pick the theme, and then fit everybody else around them.
Order by the Second Week of October
Costume inventory on the popular sizes is genuinely gone by about the twentieth, and what is left ships slowly. If you are reading this in September, you are in great shape. If it is the twenty-fifth, filter for two-day delivery and pick from what is actually in stock in your size.
My Halloween Night Hacks
Put a headlamp or a clip light on the youngest kid. Not for them, for you, so you can find them in a crowd of thirty children in dark costumes.
Feed everyone a real dinner at five. It sounds obvious and I forget every year. A kid who has eaten will make it around the whole neighborhood; a kid running on candy corn will melt down at house six.
Bring a second bag in your pocket. When their bucket gets heavy enough to drag on the sidewalk, you transfer half of it and everyone keeps going.
Take the group photo before you leave the house, in daylight, while everyone still likes each other. Nobody has ever gotten a good family photo at eight at night on a dark porch.
Keep one costume in a size up in the closet. Every year at least one kid announces at five o'clock that they have changed their mind, and having a spare has saved my whole evening more than once.
